William Buchanan Sanderson (Bill), age 84, of Overland Park, KS, died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Hospice House of Kansas City of natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Village Presbyterian Church Chapel, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Village Presbyterian Church Food Pantry.
William B. Sanderson was born February 7, 1924 in Bowling Green, MO to Paul and Julia Sanderson and grew up with his three brothers, Paul, Dick and Clifford.
Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps August 7, 1942. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Palmyra Island and Maui before moving to the 5th Amphibious Corps. There he participated in landings at Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Bill was honorably discharged, after serving 38 months, on October 6, 1945.
Bill graduated from Missouri University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in February of 1950. He worked for Butler Manufacturing for 33 years before retiring in 1986. Bill’s favorite hobbies were golf and art work. Bill became a proud member of the Village Presbyterian Church in 1986 and enjoyed volunteering as a greeter and in the business office of the food pantry.
Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Josephine Sanderson, May 17, 1965; wife of 35 years, Edith Sanderson, June 2, 2002; and sons, Steven C. Butterworth and Richard Sanderson.
Bill is survived by his son William B. Sanderson II and daughter Ann Ash; five granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; three brothers and one daughter-in-law; and a dear friend, Terry Parker.
