William Cornelius Dean, 87, of Overland Park, KS passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008 at his home. Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 15th at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66207. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church or the YMCA of the Rockies, 2515 Tunnel Road, Estes Park, CO 80511.
Bill was born on March 27, 1921 in Dayton Ohio to W.E. Dean and Elizabeth Abbott Dean. He attended Cincinnati elementary schools and Culver Military Academy. He was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. Bill served in the Army during WWII with the 819th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He married Elaine Joy Cowles of Wichita, KS in 1950. He was employed by Boeing-Wichita as Plant Layout Planner, Bendix Kansas City Division, and retired from Black & Veach as an estimator in 1989. Bill volunteered with wife, Elaine, at Public TV KCPT for 30 years. He also was a volunteer page at the Johnson County Library Central Branch for 16 years in the circulation department. He was a member of Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, Overland Park, KS. Since childhood, Bill vacationed at the family summer home in Estes Park, CO, where he attended Sunday services at Hyde Chapel, YMCA of the Rockies. He was a member of the Round Hill Bath & Tennis Club. He enjoyed cooking hotdogs on the Fourth of July with the RapidDogs beginning in 1985. Bill enjoyed friends in couples Bridge at the Barn for many years. His hobbies included doing crossword puzzles simultaneously with his wife, collecting postage stamps, antiques, walking and hiking. Bill is survived by his wife, Elaine, of the home; son, William E. Dean and wife, Marguerite, Sacramento, CA; daughter, Cynthia J. Doan, Ardmore, PA; granddaughter, Allison J. Doan, also of Ardmore, PA; nephew, Nevin L. Gates, Katy, TX and niece, Caroline Gates Kopp, Lubbock, TX and their families.
