Willetta M. Smith, 90, Prairie Village, KS, passed away January 16, 2016 at home. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Wednesday, January 20 at Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. , Thursday, January 21 at the chapel, with burial following at Corinth Cemetery in Prairie Village. Memorial contributions may be made to Prairie Baptist Church.
Willetta was born November 6, 1925 in Kansas City, MO, to parents Walter and Hazel (Tennison) Willard. She graduated from Central High School. In 1947 she was married to Wilson Smith, Sr., and they were parents to five children. The family moved to Prairie Village in 1954. Willetta enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, water aerobics and was an avid baseball fan who loved the Royals. Besides being a loving and devoted mother, Willetta had a 20-year career with the IRS, having started as a part-timer and working her way up to serving as a criminal investigator. Willetta was unwavering in her faith and a longtime member of Prairie Baptist Church. She would read the entire Bible on a yearly basis.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Wilson Smith, Sr., a son, Wilson, Jr.; her parents; and four sisters. Her survivors include: daughter, Willetta (Charles) Lawhead of DeSoto, KS; son, Wayne (Kim) Smith of Ponca City, OK; son, Warren (Stacey) Smith of Prairie Village, KS; daughter, Wyndee (Tom) Clark of Olathe, KS; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
