Sandy was born in Brunswick, Missouri to Violet and Cecil Sanders. She attended Central Methodist University from 1948-1951 but transferred to the University of Missouri in Columbia where she graduated in 1952. She became a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority in which she remained active throughout her life.
She moved to Kansas City to begin her teaching career which would span 36 years. One co-worker wrote that as a teacher Sandy was ?outstanding, caring, and went the extra mile.? Wherever she went in Johnson County Sandy met appreciative students and their families.
She met her husband Marion in Kansas City and they were married fifty years. Sandy was a member of Nall Avenue Baptist Church. She was a lifelong basketball fan and always rooted for KU, unless they were playing MU, her alma mater. After retirement, Marion and Sandy enjoyed travel in the US and Europe. Later in life, Sandy also enjoyed water aerobics, volunteering in KCMO schools, and most especially her grandchildren.
