Vernon Johnson

April 9, 1925 — May 17, 2012

Born April 9, 1925, he is 3rd son of Marie and Raymond Johnson. Baptized in Christ at the Disciples of Christ Church, Kansas City, KS. He was a member of Westwood Christian Church 5050 Rainbow until his marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church KCMO. He attended Snow Elementary, and then Rosedale Jr. and Sr. High School. He completed his senior year at KC KS Junior College in the summer of 1943 as he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a Pharmacist Mate 1st Class on the USS Henrico. He saw action in the South Pacific at Okinawa as a corpsman. He was on route for the invasion of Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped. After naval service he returned home and married his high school sweetheart Laura M. Winkler on June 18th, 1947.
His career included two years as a salesman for Corn Products Sales, lived in Concordia KS. In 1951 Vernon and Laura moved back to Kansas City. He worked for BMA, then Kansas City Terminal Railway Company as a Fireman and Engineer for almost 20 years. During his tenure at the railroad he was General Chairman for the Brotherhood of Locomotive, Firemen and Engineers. He went back to college and completed his degree in Economics and graduated from UMKC in 1975. He changed careers and worked for the Kansas City Area Hospital Association specializing in wage and salary. He was then hired at Trinity Lutheran Hospital and served as Director of Human Resources until his retirement in January of 1992. He was Chairman of the Missouri State Hospital Personnel Hospital Administrators. He served as Chairman for Heartland Council of Campfire. His hobbies included playing the accordion, oil painting, photography, playing bridge and woodworking. He was a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, his tribal name was Big White Crashing Rock. He is survived by his bride of 64 years Laura M. Johnson, daughter Cindy Cone of Mesa, AZ. and her husband Ron Cone, his son Roger O. Johnson of Overland Park and his wife Julie Johnson, grandchildren Patrick Cone and wife Corrinne, Cheryl Finch and her husband Fletcher, Owen Johnson, and Bart Johnson, and 5 great grandchildren, his brother Byron N. Johnson of Overland Park and cousins Kenneth Johnson of Overland Park and Ed Johnson of Oswego, OR. He is a member on Bethany Lutheran Church 9101 Lamar, Overland Park, KS. The family suggests memorials to Bethany Lutheran.
A visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Bethany Lutheran Church followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m.; burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
