Verna Margaret Oaks Riley was born on December 15, 1915 at Geneva, Nebraska to Harry Oaks and Grace Crandall. She was the only surviving child of Harry and Grace Oaks, with two brothers and one sister dying as infants. Verna grew up in Geneva and Strang Nebraska and in Marysville, Kansas. She lived and worked for a time in Lincoln, Nebraska in the 1930's and married Roy Riley. After Roy's service in WWII, the couple made their home in the Kansas City area beginning in 1949. Verna worked for the State of Kansas and retired after twenty years of service as a Job Placement Specialist. Her husband, Roy A. Riley passed away July 16, 1988. Verna was a member of the Roeland Park United Methodist Church, and a member of the Newton-Davis Post 869 of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She lived in her own home until ill health forced her to leave in July, 2011. At that time she began living at Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation in Merriam, Kansas. She passed from this life on Monday morning, March 5, 2012 at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 21 days. Verna was preceded in death by her husband Roy A. Riley, her parents, 2 brothers and one sister. She is survived by nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, friends and neighbors. Verna's final resting place will be in her family plot next to her husband Roy in the Geneva, Nebraska Cemetery.
