Born in Corsicana, Texas on May 12, 1923, Vera Katherine attended The University of Texas in Austin after graduating from Corsicana High School. In 1942 she married Edward E. Kilgore, in B-17 flight training at Ellington Field, Texas. After WW II, the Kilgores moved to Kansas City after Edward was recruited as a commercial airline pilot by fledgling Trans World Airlines.
A rich and varied airline career -- interrupted briefly by a stint in the Tactical Air Command -- led the Kilgores and their growing family on a odyssey that included residence in Boston, St Johns, Newfoundland, Long Island, New York, and finally Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the result of a Boeing/ TWA/ State Department deal that sent senior TWA training staff to Saudi Arabia to instruct Saudi Arabian Airlines pilots in flying the airline?s new 727 Boeing jets. The family remained in Saudi Arabia for two years afterward as Ed Kilgore accepted a temporary assignment as General Manager of Saudi Arabian Airlines.
Kay Kilgore was a veteran lifelong traveler, exploring Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and nearly every nook and cranny of North America.
The family returned permanently to the Kansas City area in 1964, as Ed occupied a senior position in TWA?s 747 training program. After Ed?s death in 1973, ?VK? maintained residence for many years in Overland Park.
Among other accomplishments, Kay Kilgore was an avid world-class bridge player, a Life Master. She was also a long-time member of The Leawood United Methodist Church.
She is survived by Robert Edward Kilgore of Kansas City, John Raymond Kilgore of Phoenix, Susan Elaine Durrie of Olathe, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
