VANCEL R. CARNS
Vancel R. Carns, 84, of Lenexa, Kansas died July 22 at St. Luke's Hospital following a massive heart attack. He was born December 31, 1925 in North Platte, Nebraska. He thought his New Year's Eve birth date was very special because everyone helped him celebrate. Vance is survived by his wife, Gladys, of the home and his sister Virginia Woods of North Platte, Nebraska. During World War II Vance entered the Navy V-5 program and studied at Doane College, Crete, Nebraska to become a Navy pilot. He made his living as a carpenter, even built his own home where he lived at the time of his death. Severe arthritis forced his retirement and he then joined the Overland Park Police Department where he served as a school crossing guard. He enjoyed his job and loved talking about "his kids" at 103 and Rosehill. Vance was a member of Monticello United Methodist Church and he especially enjoyed the activities of the Methodist Men's group. His church family was with him at the hospital during his final hours with their generous support. A celebration of Vance's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at Monticello United Methodist Church, 23860 West 75th Street Shawnee, KS. Visitation will precede the service at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow after service at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Vance’s name to Animal Haven or the church.
