Terry Chapman

November 30, 1925 — January 11, 2010

Terry W. Chapman, 84, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away in his home on January 11, 2010, after a brief illness. Terry was born on November 30, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., to Andrew and Louise Chapman. He graduated from high school in Creston, Iowa, in 1944. After coming to Kansas City, he worked for two architects before starting his own architectural firm in 1952. He began by drawing houses for a number of builders. By the early 1960s he had begun designing churches, office buildings, apartments, and developing strip shopping centers throughout Missouri. His son, Joel, joined him in 1979, and they worked together every day for the last 30 years. Terry loved helping people. He loved designing buildings and poured himself completely into every project. He had many repeat clients. His favorite building project was the next project. Terry was a devoted member of Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist in Kansas City, Mo., and a member of the Mother Church in Boston, Mass. Terry and his wife Victoria were members of the local Cadillac Club and the Buick Club and enjoyed their 1940 Cadillac and 1940 Buick. In 1984, Terry was the architect for the restoration of the Alexander Majors Historical House on State Line and spent the next 25 years giving of himself to this beautiful historical site. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, brother and two sisters, and is survived by his wife of 57 years, Victoria; his son, Joel; his daughter-in- law Karen; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One of his greatest lessons to his family was his lifetime of generosity. He lived every day of his life always giving to others and thinking of others first. Contributions may be made to the Alexander Majors Historical House, 8201 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64114. He was cremated and a private memorial service was held. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at the website www.overlandparkchapel.com. (Arr.: D.W.
