Shirley Hodgson

September 26, 1927 — December 2, 2012

Shirley Ann Mowrey Hodgson. 85, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away on December 2, 2012 in her home surrounded by family. She was a wonderful mother to Nancy Hodgson Ruzicka of Mission Hills, Kansas and Dr. David Hodgson of Washington, Kansas. Her husband of 66 years, Keith Hodgson, survives her and she joins her two other sons, Thomas Kevin Hodgson and Alan Brent Hodgson who have pre-deceased her.
Shirley was born on September 26, 1927 in Luray, Kansas, daughter of Opie Olin Mowrey and Anna Lillian Patton Mowrey. She was one of seven children and is survived by two sisters, Alice Mowrey Bland of Ponca City, Oklahoma and Kathryn Mowrey Roberts of Austin, Texas.
Her family was raised in Hutchinson, Kansas where she lived for 21 years. She was a volunteer for many organizations including Grace Hospital and the Trinity Methodist Church. When her children were in college, she worked for the Lettner Hinshaw Lab. In 1970 Keith and Shirley moved to Overland Park, Kansas where she became the manager for the Kenilworth Apartments and subsequently the Villa Medici Apartments for 10 years. She also volunteered for many years at St. Joesph's Hospital.
Her later years were spent with her children and grandchildren, Dr. Ashley Simmons and husband, Chase; Lindsay Elizabeth Ruzicka; John Hodgson Ruzicka and his fiancée, Chiara Nardelli Marchetti; Thomas Edward Ruzicka; Britt Hodgson; Tyler Hodgson and his wife Jamie; Dylan Hodgson and her daughter –in-law, Melody Hodgson and her two sons, Brady Wyatt and his wife, Marcy, and Jordan Wyatt. Lily Simmons and Camilla Simmons, her great granddaughters, were a source of much pleasure and many smiles.
We will all miss her support and love but want to picture her happily re-united with her sons and other family members and friends, free of her physical burdens.
After a private family gathering, inurnment will be at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions will benefit the Adelaide C. Ward Women's Heart Health Center at The University of Kansas Hospital: Checks payable to KU Endowment and mailed to Fund Development, 2330 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Ste 302, Westwood, KS 66205 or give online at www.achangeofheartkc.org.
