Shirley A. Bratton, 78, died peacefully in her sleep on August 28, 2009.
Shirley was born February 24, 1931 to Stephen Thomas Novotny, a farmer, and Pearl Agnes (Erickson) in Badger, Minnesota. While an only child, she enjoyed the company of many cousins and close family when growing up.
She met an Airman, James Bratton and they married in Rapid City, South Dakota on September 1, 1950. She was a dedicated military wife, mother and professional in many civil service roles. She was awarded numerous citations and commendations for her dedication and loyalty as a civil servant.
Shirley was always there for her kids. She was “team mom” at Shawnee Mission West High School for football or band, and a friend to any stray kid or needy critter. She supported Masonry, DeMolay, Eastern Star, York and Scottish Rite, Abdallah Shrine and military veterans.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents. She mourned the loss of her youngest, Steven (1977), a promising student, and her oldest daughter, Carla Bratton Johnson (2001), a gifted educator and principal.
Shirley is survived by daughters Sherri (Roy) Smith and Rhonda (D.) Dawkins, son-in-law Mark Johnson, grandchildren Matthew (Nicole) Johnson, Blake (Crystal) Johnson, Shaun Dawkins and Heather Dawkins. She truly enjoyed sharing her love with great-grandson, Colby Turner Johnson.
Shirley went to God’s arms knowing she left many wonderful friends, family and “honorary family” she will see again.
The love of the Vintage Park family won’t be forgotten, nor the loving care of Hospice Care of Kansas.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 7 p.m., at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS.
