Samuel Frederick (Fred) Bruns, 84, of Overland Park, Ks, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2011. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 21, at D. W. Newcomers Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Ks, with a rosary at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday, August 22, at Cure’ of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road, Leawood, Ks, with internment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to Cure’ of Ars Catholic Church.
Fred was born to Frank and Sarah Bruns November 24, 1926, in Conception Junction, Mo. He married Helen J. Spalitto on June 17, 1950. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Jenny Zaner, Frank, Margaret Pogue, Brother Lorian Gilbert FSC, Bill, John, and Tom, and his youngest son Robert (Rick). He is survived by his wife, Helen Bruns; children, Paul (Linda), and Pete (Sandy); grandchildren, Adam (Brandi), Andrew, and Rick (Michelle); great-grandchildren, Caleb, Seth, Ava, and Bella Idonna, Brielle; and his siblings, Sister Zita Marie RSM, Ruth Nelson, Ann Trussel (Bob), Jim, and David.

Fred served in the Navy Air Corps during WWII. He attended Holy Cross Grade School, Glennon High School, Rochhurst College, and graduated from the UMKC School of Pharmacy in 1950. Fred owned a Pharmacy from 1950 to 1955, then worked for the Katz Drug Company (later acquired by Osco and Albertsons), retiring from there in 1985, but continuing to work part time until 1991. Fred joined the Volunteer Program of Johnson County, was a volunteer tutor at Cure’ of Ars Grade School, the GED program at Antioch Library, and delivered hot meals to shut-ins for the Johnson County Agency on Aging.
