Ruth Keroher
Ruth died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. Ruth was born on December 2, 1907, east of Stillwell, KS, on property homesteaded by her Grandfather, Charles G. Case. She was the daughter of E. J and Anna Fults. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters as well as her husband of 53 years, William Clyde Keroher, who died in 1986. She is survived by her brother-in-law Chester Francis of Olathe. She will be remembered by many long time friends and former students.
After attending Emporia State for two years she received her degree from the UMKC. She retired in 1975 after 46 years of teaching in Shawnee Mission Schools. During her years at Roesland Elementary Schools she taught every grade level from kindergarten through eighth grade, including girls physical education classes. She is remembered as the coach of the Girls' Basketball Teams for 13 years. Her last five years were spent at Bluejacket Elementary School as a special reading teacher.
Ruth was a member of the Southridge Presbyterian Church. She was a Past President of the Shawnee Mission Branch of the American Association of University Women, the Shawnee Mission La Sertoma Club, the Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly of Greater Kansas City and the Ton-ka-wa Unit of Family and Community Education. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Johnson county Teachers Association and the Shawnee Mission Indian Historical Society.
As one of the founders of the Holiday Shop concept to assist needy families during the holiday season, Ruth was a faithful volunteer with the Johnson County Christmas Bureau since 1977. She was there to help when the first shop opened in 1977. At age 103 Ruth was the Honorary Guest at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Johnson County Christmas Bureau held at the Community College in October, 2010 in recognition of her many years as a dedicated volunteer to the Christmas Bureau.
A memorial service will be held at Southridge Presbyterian Church, 5015 Buena Vista Drive, Roeland Park, KS on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM.
