Rosa Anna "Marie" Marfurt
1920-2010
Rose Marie Marfurt passed away peacefully on July 9, 2010 at Wilshire Manor living
facility in Lee's Summit, Missouri in the loving care of Crossroads Hospice and the
Wilshire Staff. Rose Marie was born in Lucerne, Switzerland and was preceded in death
by her parents Hermann and Rosa, a sister Trudy Flury and niece Brigette Marfurt. She
is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Hans and Erina Marfurt, and her three
nephews Konrad and Bernard Marfurt and Arnold Flury. In addition she is survived by
her many friends, especially James Cornell, Jack Wray and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Reese and
family.
Rose Marie graduated from high school in Lucerne in 1939 demonstrating a unique gift
for languages. In addition to Swiss German, she was fluent in French, Italian, English
and studied Russian. In 1946 she obtained a position as nanny and French teacher to the
children of the Egyptian royal family. After returning to Switzerland, she worked at the
Egyptian Embassy in Berne. Later she taught languages at private schools in Berne. She
eventually joined the Staff as a French and English professor at the Humboltdtianum, a
private preparatory school for university entrance examinations.
In 1966 she became a French and German professor at the University of Missouri at
Kansas City and taught there until her retirement. Due to her love for languages and
other cultures, she traveled extensively. She loved the Kansas City Symphony and the
Ballet. She was an active member of the Alliance Francaise, serving as its president.
She, also, enjoyed the activities of the Swiss and German clubs. The French Prime
Minister, in 1997, awarded her the Chavalier dans L'Ordre del Palmes Academiques in
recognition of her services on behalf of the French language and culture in the United
States.
After a long battle with dementia, Rose Marie was cremated by the D. W. Newcomers
Sons Funeral Home. Memorial services and burial will be held at a later date in Lucerne,
