ROBERTA WALKER HUDDLESTON

Roberta Walker Huddleston, 92, passed away peacefully at her home in Mission Hills on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011. Services will be private.

Roberta was born on Aug. 27, 1919, in Osborne, Kan., to Bertine Pinckney and Althea Closon Walker. Her father was a syndicated columnist and the longtime editor of the Osborne County Farmer. He served as State Printer from 1921 to 1933. Roberta graduated from Topeka High School in 1937 and went on to the University of Kansas. She joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was a Jayhawker beauty queen. She graduated in 1941 with a degree in history, and then did secretarial work for Dun and Bradstreet and the Kansas Legislature.

After World War II, she was spotted across a crowded room by a young banker and former KU classmate from Oskaloosa, Kan., named Lee Huddleston. He tracked her down to ask her for a date. They were married on June 29, 1950, and shared 59 years together before his death in 2009. Lee was chairman of the Country Club Bank and president of the Missouri Bankers Association.

Roberta was a member of the Junior League of Topeka and later, Kansas City, Mo. She was a docent at the Wornall House, and a former member of Indian Hills Country Club. She was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Most of all, she enjoyed taking care of her home and family. She was never swayed to just follow the crowd; she lived life on her own terms.

Left to mourn her uncompromising spirit are her daughter, Mary Ann Powell, and her husband, Nick, of Mission Hills; and her grandchildren: David, Stephen and Melissa Powell. She was preceded in death by her 96-year-old sister, Ruth O'Riley of Topeka, in July. The family wishes to thank the caregivers of Kansas City Home Care, especially Tabitha McReynolds, Catrina Miller, Sharon Amrine, and Ella Scott, for their care and devotion.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the KU Endowment Association, P.O. Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044, or the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, 8740 Founders Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46268.
