Robert Buckner

April 16, 1947 — July 22, 2009

Robert Hamilton Buckner passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 surrounded by his family. Rob was born in Kansas City, Missouri on April 16, 1947, was a life long resident, and graduated from Pembroke Country Day School. He graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri in 1969 with a degree in Economics, and was a fourth generation member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. The Buckner family, including Rob, his father Robert C. Buckner, son Brad Buckner and nephew Rob Houston were recognized as the 2002 Westminster College Family of the Year for their four generation legacy and on-going support of the College. Rob was also awarded the 2006 Alumni Award of Merit for his leadership role on the Board of Trustees, and his continued support and fundraising efforts. He also earned a graduate degree from the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin.

Rob joined Country Club Bank in 1969 as a teller, beginning a forty- year career with the bank. He worked in various positions, and was named President of the bank in 1984. He was forever grateful to Lee Huddleston and Jay Reynolds, then owners of the bank, for giving him the opportunity to succeed in the banking industry. In 1985 he and Byron G. Thompson partnered to purchase the bank from Mr. Huddleston. Mr. Buckner continued his career at Country Club Bank until he lost his battle with cancer.
He will be remembered as a great mentor to his associates at the Bank, as he was a leader and a friend to those who sought his sound judgement, encouragement and support.

Although Rob had a full career, he always found time for his family and friends. He loved golf, and enjoyed many beautiful days with his golf buddies on the courses of Kansas City Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club, and The Ford Plantation in southern Georgia. The Fall months would find him hunting at the Hillcrest Duck Club with fellow members, friends, and his beloved Golden Retreiver, Bonnie. His dry sense of humor and candid comments never ceased to entertain his family and friends, and will be sadly missed.

Rob made lasting friendships through his memberships in both social and community organizations. He supported The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, founded by Tom Watson, he was a member of Village Presbyterian Church, the Mercury Club, Missouri Bankers’ Association, Kansas Bankers’ Association, Westminster College Board of Trustees, past member of University of Missouri at Kansas City Board of Trustees, The Kansas City Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club, The River Club, The Hillcrest Duck Club, and The Ford Plantation Sporting Club.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leila Broyles and John Carroll Hamilton, Margaret Cave and Jacob Maddox Buckner, and niece Erin Hamilton Buckner. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Robert C. Buckner and wife Jean Buckner; wife, Catherine Anderson Buckner, his children Robert Bradford Buckner and wife Amie, Margaret Buckner Stadler and husband James, and their daughter Leila Frances Stadler, and Annabelle Farris Buckner; sister Carroll Buckner McKenna and husband Terry, brother Jacob Maddox Buckner II and wife Jan, and neices and nephews, Kelly Buckner Fox, Robert Houston, Holly Jones, Bonnie Loyd; and his wife’s children Kara Nelson Adam and Katie Nelson Ingram.
