Richard N. Wakefield, Jr., 80, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 at Shawnee Mission Hospital. Celebration of his life will be held with a Memorial Service at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, on Saturday, May 15, 10:00a. Visitation with the family will follow immediately after.
Dick was born August 24, 1929 in Kansas City, Mo. After achieving Eagle Scout status and graduating from Paseo High School, where he made lifelong friends (potluck group) , Dick attended the University of Kansas for Architectural Engineering, and began a 58 year marriage to Pat. During the Korean War, he served two years active duty in the U.S. 5th Army - Combat Engineers while stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. His professional life started in his father’s architectural firm, managing design and building projects; eventually assuming ownership. Dick’s interests included golf; love of out-of-doors, dogs, and traveling with his wife throughout the U.S. He enjoyed studying history (Civil War, Lewis and Clark Expedition). Fulfilling a lifelong dream, for his 80th birthday, Dick traveled the Lewis and Clark Trail from Missouri River to Pacific Ocean accompanied by his three children along the way.
Preceded in death by his wife, Patricia J. Wakefield; parents, Richard N. Wakefield Sr. and Elizabeth C. Wakefield. Survived by children; Laura W. Kaufman, Rebecca J. Cheatham, Richard N. Wakefield III; 7 grandchildren; and sister, Carolyn Simmons.
