Richard James Desmond, 84, of Mission, KS, passed away April 19, 2008.
Dick was born May 28, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of James Chester Desmond and Hazel Marie (Deyling) Desmond. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1942 and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. Following his military service, he graduated from Rockhurst College in 1948. Dick retired from the Social Security Administration in 1985 after 20 years.
He was a member of Mensa, Sons of the American Revolution and VFW. Dick was a sixteen year survivor of lung cancer. Among his many talents and interests, he was a poet, photographer, bowler, golfer, collector, camper, historian and genealogist.
Dick married Marilyn Jean White on July 9, 1949. She died March 19, 1984. He was also preceded in death by a younger sister, Jean McGann. Survivors include a sister, Ann Marie Hood (Frank); his children, Mary Kathleen Goldsich (Ray), Donald James Desmond (Mary), and Patricia Desmond Markey (Richard); grandchildren, Dr. Kate Goldsich, Joe Goldsich, Matt Goldsich, Pete Goldsich, Dylan Desmond, Megan Markey Hood (Ryan), Jeff Markey and Laura Markey.
Dick was a gentle man with a delightful wit. He will be sorely missed. Special thanks to Larry LeRoy, Ann Vock and all of Dick?s neighbors and friends for enriching his life.
