R. SAM ELLIOTT
R. Sam Elliott, 82, Kansas City, Mo., died February 23, 2011, from health complications after a fall.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan. A reception will be held following the service at the home. Private burial at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Sam was born June 18, 1928, in Kirksville, Mo., but grew up in Chillicothe, Mo., where he attended school, graduating from Chillicothe High School in 1946. After spending his freshman year at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., Sam became a Jayhawk at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He loved to tell others about his unique living quarters. Due to the war and limited student housing, he lived in a room underneath the football stadium. He graduated from KU in 1950 with a degree in political science.
After college, the Korean War had begun and Sam joined the Air Force where he was stationed at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base near Cheyenne, Wyo.
After leaving the military, Sam began his career as a banker, joining City National Bank & Trust Company in Kansas City (now UMB). In 1968, he moved to Blue Hills Bank of Commerce where he served as a loan officer until his retirement. While at the bank, he was active in the 49/63 Coalition of Neighborhoods.
He met Barbara Kellogg in 1956. They were married on October 5, 1958, and enjoyed 52 years of marriage.
Sam was a faithful and interested volunteer in a number of community organizations. He served on the Honorary Board of Governors of Baptist Medical Center doing a variety of activities, including visiting out-of-town patients at the hospital. This organization later merged with Service Partners Organization at Research Medical Center where he most recently worked in the hospital gift shop. Sam was also an original member of the Kansas City International Airport Ambassadors where you could find him every Monday greeting and assisting incoming passengers. In total, he gave more than 3,400 hours of service to the airport. In addition, he volunteered at Union Station for three years and was a deacon and elder for many years at Cherokee Christian Church.
In his retirement years, Sam built a five-hole golf course on his farm near Braymer, Mo., and enjoyed many rounds of golf with his longtime friend and golfing companion, Hardee Richey.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; daughter Mary of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter Sarah Biles and husband Brad, of Prairie Village, Kan., and two granddaughters, Morgan and Megan; sister Rose Matheny, niece Debbie Davison and nephew Jim Matheny of Florida and cousin Russell Wells of Florissant, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. M.E. and Leota Elliott.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association or the Service Partners Organization at Research Medical Center. Share a memory, sign an online guestbook, or express your condolences at www.overlandparkchapel.com.
