PHYLLIS RUSSELL GREATHOUSE

Phyllis Russell Greathouse, 83, Shawnee Mission, Kansas, passed away September 29, 2011 at home. Visitation will be held Wednesday October 5th from 6-8 p.m. at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Private family graveside services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, 6901 Troost, Kansas City, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Hospice.
Mrs. Greathouse was born January 15, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of Phil and Marguerite Russell, and was a lifelong resident of the area. She attended Southwest High School and Kansas State University where she was a member of Alpha XI Delta Sorority. In addition to her church membership, she was a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NABO), Kansas City Anglers' Club, The Fashion Group of Kansas City, The Kansas City Rose Society, Friends of the Zoo, Friends of Art, and various Merchants' Associations.
From 1954 until 1971, Mrs. Greathouse was a buyer for Farrar's on the Country Club Plaza. In 1971 she and two of her daughters opened The French Room Intimate Apparel Shop in the Ward Parkway Center. This operation later expanded to include two stores in the Kansas City Area and one in Wichita, Kansas. All were closed by October 2000.
An avid reader, Mrs. Greathouse also enjoyed crossword puzzles, games of bridge and the company of her many friends. She especially looked forward to joining the women of the family for meetings of the "Lunch Brunch" every Saturday. She was a devoted mother, dedicated grandmother and great-grandmother.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents and her beloved son-in-law, John Steven Wheatley. Survivors include her 3 children, Susan Wheatley, Stacy Greathouse, Phil and Sharon Greathouse ; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She took pleasure in the simple things; a friend to all she knew. She will be greatly missed.
