PHILIP PERRY OLDBERG
Philip Perry Oldberg, Jr., died Sunday, October 10, at Galway Homes in Leawood, Kansas. He was 87.
Born in Kansas City, he was a graduate of Shawnee Mission Rural High School. In 1940, he graduated from the University Of Kansas School Of Engineering with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a Lt. (JG) on the USS Mount McKinley, an amphibious force command ship in the Pacific.
In 1946, he married Muriel Swanson of Kansas City. They are parents of six children.
Following World War II, he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, Colo. He returned to Kansas City and worked for the Marley Cooling Tower Company from which he retired.
He was a long-time volunteer with the Heart of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America including serving as an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 50. He loved participating in many activities including golfing, bowling, wood crafting, traveling and visiting the home he built at Lake Pomme de Terre.
He is survived by his wife; six children: Carl (Judy) of Cary, Ill., Mark (Linda) of Overland Park, Pamela Taylor of Prairie Village, Karen Oldberg (Doyle Arnett) of Kansas City, Eric Oldberg of Kansas City, and David Oldberg (Janie) of Prairie Village; a sister, Katherine A. Wilhelmsen of Prairie Village, and a brother, Willard E. Oldberg (Florence) of Mission.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren: Elizabeth Oldberg of Chicago, Ill., Katharine Oldberg of Humble, Texas; Morgan Waters of Park Ridge, Ill., Amanda Fuqua (Jason) of Mission, Christine Lee (Jacob) of Paola; Daniel Spottswood of Kansas City, Michael Spottswood (Hayli) of Linwood, Kans., Matthew Spottswood (Charlene) of Kansas City, and Andrew Spottswood of Kansas City. He also is survived by four great grandchildren: Lilliana, Vivian and Archer Lee; and Atticus Mount.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at D. W. Newcomer & Sons, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park. The funeral service will at 1 p.m., Friday, also at D.W. Newcomers & Sons.
