Phil Lewis, 83, of Mesa, AZ (formerly of Overland Park, KS), passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009. Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Prairie Early Childhood Center, 7416 Roe Ave Prairie Village, KS 66208.
Phil worked 30 years for the U.S. Government retiring in February 1981. He later was a self-employed insurance agent from February 1981 to August 1999. Phil served as a volunteer chaplain at K.U. Medical Center for 7 years, volunteered at the Prairie Early Childhood Center for 9 years where he was known as “Grandpa Phil”, and worked 11 years at the Prairie Baptist Church Sunday Night Program for Kids. He was a “Stephen Minister” at Prairie Baptist Church. Phil was an Army veteran of WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Lewis January 8, 1990; and a daughter, Cindy (Lewis) Phillips in 2002. Survivors include a son, Stephen and his wife, Joyce of Raymore, MO; 2 grandchildren: Amanda Lewis of Evanston, IL; and Nolan Lewis of Raymore, MO. He isd also survived by numerous “Adopted” grandchildren including: Mindi Crane; Lindsay, Scott, and Chris Morris; and 1 “Adopted” great grandchild, Kirstyn Crane.
