Paula Reeve Virden, 86, died peacefully from complications of Alzheimer’s on Saturday, December 26, 2009, at Senior Care Homes in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born December 5, 1923 in Phoenix, Arizona, the only child of Vera and Paul Reeve.
Paula met her husband, Herbert H. Virden, M. D., while both were attending the University of Kansas. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and graduated with a major in Journalism. Herb and Paula were married in June of 1945, and settled in Kansas City where they raised their four children. A devoted mother, Paula was active in PTA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and other activities involving her children. Other affiliations included the Crippled Children-Easter Seal Society, Docent Program at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, St. Andrew’s Church, Junior League of Kansas City, MO and Scottsdale Garden Club. In retirement, Paula and Herb chose to return to her native Arizona where they spent many happy years in Paradise Valley.
Paula was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Herbert H. Virden, M.D. (1985), and her son, Michael Virden (1992). She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Ford Brent, and her daughter, Susan Carpenter, all of Mission Hills, Kansas; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Karri Virden, of Phoenix, Arizona; ten grandchildren, Jeffrey Brent, M.D., Christopher Brent, Thomas Carpenter, Scott Carpenter, Lisa Carpenter, Sarah Virden, Christin Virden, Katie Virden, Kyle Virden, and Mackenzie Virden; and two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Carpenter and Mabel Brent.
A private family service will be held on Tuesday, December 29th. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3846 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208 or the American Cancer Society, 6700 Antioch, Suite 100, Merriam, KS 66204.
