Paul Gordon Murphy, age 88, Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away on April 14, 2009 at Shawnee Mission Hospital. Private memorial service at Mount Moriah Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at Village Presbyterian Church, 87th and Mission Road on Friday, April 17th at 11:00 a.m. Friends may visit with the family at the church following the memorial service.
Paul was born in 1920 to Thomas and Mildred Murphy in Cleveland, Ohio. He has lived in the Kansas City area since 1945 after he married Winifred Lee Norman. He was senior vice president of City Bond and Mortgage Company later United Missouri Bank Mortgage Company. Paul retired in 1981 after being with the company for 35 years.
He attended Fenn Engineering College, Cleveland, Ohio before entering the military service. After the service he took summer courses at Michigan State University and MIT University.
As a Captain in the Marine Air Force he served in World War II as an instructor and was called back in 1952 as a night fighter pilot to fight in the Korean War. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and five air medals. His love of flying continued after the war and he purchased a plane in which the family took many trips. He even taught Wannie and his four children to fly, as he said “in case of an emergency”.
Paul was a member of the American Society of Appraisers, Mortgage Bankers Association, Kansas Real Estate Brokers, Homebuilders Association, Optimist Club of Kansas City, Breakfast at Eight Club, County Club Masonic Lodge, Scottish Right, and Ararat Shrine. He was also a charter member of the Village Presbyterian Church, Indian Hills Country Club and Homestead Country Club.
Along with being an avid golfer, he loved traveling and enjoying the time he spent boating and water skiing with family at their home at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Surviving are his wife, Winifred (Wannie) of 64 years, two daughters Diane Lee Davis of Tucson, Arizona, Kathleen Ann Grendell of Tempe, Arizona and their spouses Montague Davis and Eric Grendell; two sons, William Thomas Murphy of Lenexa, Kansas and his spouse Jeri Murphy and Donald Gordon Murphy of Prairie Village, Kansas. Also a sister, Lenore Beck of Port Charlotte, Florida. Surviving also are nine beloved grandchildren, Amy McDaniel, Carrie Bernal, Eric, Dan, Chad and Cory Grendell; Christie Furney, Jessica Murphy and Craig Murphy and six adored great-granddaughters; Megan, Mackenzie, Maegan, Lauryn, Hannah and Addison and five great-grandsons: Ryan, Mathew, Landyn, Andrew and Bodhi along with two nephews Paul and Charles Kelly.
