NORMA J. McKIMMY
Norma Jean McKimmy passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at her home in Overland Park after a battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis. Norma was a caring and devoted person who loved God, loved life and loved her family and friends. She was always there when someone needed her. Norma always put others before herself. When her daughter was born with a birth defect, Norma studied nursing in order to take care of her.
Norma was an active supporter of Veterans as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 24 years. She served as President of Unit 370 in Overland Park and as President of the Second District, Department of Kansas. She also served as Historian for the Department of Kansas. She was a mentor to many Auxiliary members, and a leader who thought outside the box to solve problems.
After her husband Emery retired from the Navy, they moved to Overland Park, where Norma reopened her grandmother Ella Rollo’s Overland Park Florist on Elmhurst Drive. She operated it for a number of years until health problems caused her to close the business.
Norma loved to sew, and loved making crafts, beading and playing bingo. She met many of her friends in the pursuit of her hobbies.
Norma is survived by her husband of 32 years, Emery McKimmy of Overland Park; daughter Deborha “Sam” Baez and husband Rick of Jacksonville, Florida; son Jason Lamb and wife Elizabeth of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; sons Douglas McKimmy of Illinois and Steven McKimmy of Oregon, grandchildren Anastasia “Anna” Baez of Jacksonville, Mayuko and Benjiro Lamb and Emily Balentine of Lee’s Summit; sisters Donna Leap and Pamela Chisam of Kansas City; brothers Lawrence Swartz of Virginia and Phillip Swartz of Overland Park. She also will be missed by her four legged companions Cuddle Bunny which was her service dog, and Butter Cup.
