NANCY THURSTON – Nancy Alice Geake Thurston, 91, passed away early Sunday, January
14th . Services will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 20th.
Nancy was born to Samuel and Katherine Metzger Geake Sept. 18, 1926, in Ft. Wayne IN,
where she lived first with her mother, father and sister, and later with her husband and children
until moving to Overland Park, KS in 1994.
Nancy attended Hanover College in Indiana where she played field hockey, studied liberal arts,
and met and married the late William Asher Thurston. Their nicknames for each other were
Dreamboat and Laughing Face and they shared lifelong happiness. Nancy worked many
interesting jobs throughout her life, but found her greatest satisfaction in community and caring
for others.
Nancy will be remembered for the things she made, the volunteer work she did, and the love
that she shared with her family, friends, church, and pets. We will remember her for building
new wings for injured butterflies and playing two-ball with her cairn terrier. She was always
ready to share cookies, fudgsicles and jokes. She enjoyed reading mysteries, working any kind
of puzzle, and doing her own carpentry.
Christmas was Nancy’s favorite holiday, and we feel glad that she was able to enjoy one last
Christmas dinner and one last Christmas tree decorated just the way she liked it, with sparkling
glass ornaments, family heirlooms, birds of all kinds, and monarch butterflies.
Nancy is predeceased by her husband Bill and her sister Betty Lou. She is survived by her
children Katherine Thurston (Stephen) Carr and Eric (Karol) Thurston, her grandchildren Julia
Carr (Bryan) Timmins, James Carr, John (Abigail) Carr, Paul Thurston, Blake Thurston, and
great grandchildren Finnegan and Lucy Timmins and Hosea and Moses Carr.
