Michael Bombeck

April 30, 1943 — April 30, 2012

Michael Harper Bombeck, 69, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away April 30, 2012. Michael
was born on February 22, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri to Charles and Virginia Bombeck. He graduated from Rockhurst High School and proudly served his country from 1960-1968 in
the US Navy Submarine Service. He then returned to Kansas City, and completed his
education with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, from the University of Missouri-
Kansas City. Following graduation Michael began his life long career in medical equipment
sales, specializing in cardiac pacemakers. He worked for Cordis Corporation, aiding
physicians in the operating room, with the correct placement of these life saving devices. He
then went on to co-own his own company, Heartbeat Medical. He retired in 1997. After losing
a dear friend, Michael felt the need to give back, and became a grief counselor at The Solace
House for many years. He was humbled by this experience and realized he benefited more
than he gave. An avid golfer, skier and certified scuba diver, Michael enjoyed traveling, and
officiating golf tournaments around the region, as a certified USGA rules official. He took
great pride in being a long-term member of Milburn Country Club, where hundreds of
members mourn his passing. Michael was a loving brother, husband, father, and papa who
loved spending quality time with his family. He was the king of jokes and irreverence, but his
soft side made him who he truly was ... loving, compassionate and humble. He taught us all
something in life. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Dr. Charles Thomas
Bombeck III. He is survived by his sister Stephanie Reed, his loving wife Jan Bombeck,
daughters: Jennifer Bombeck Blankenship (Ward Blankenship), Jill Bombeck, the mother of
his children: Judy Bombeck Luecke, and three granddaughters: Lily Jenkins, Molly Jenkins,
and Finley Blankenship. Services will be held at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, Monday May 7th at 6:30pm. The family will be receiving visitors beginning at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the
American Cancer Society 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO, 64105 or
