Mr. Michael Bates
January 1, 1975 — January 21, 2009
Michael David Bates of Eudora, Kansas died Wednesday morning, January 21, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A lifelong area resident, Mike was born January 1, 1975 and graduated from St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School and Shawnee Mission South High School.
A celebration of life service will be held 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at D.W. Newcomers Son’s Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66204. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to time of service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Lexie’s Fund care of M&I Bank, P.O. 7368, Overland Park, KS 66207.
Mike was a self-employed painting contractor and an outdoor enthusiast. He was predeceased by his father, Sid Bates, who instilled in Mike a love of adventure. An Eagle Scout himself, Sid mentored Mike throughout his Boy Scout years and the two often teamed up for such activities as rock climbing, camping and canoeing.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca, 19-month old daughter Alexandria (Lexie), mother and stepfather Pat Bates and Dean Jernigan and stepmother Paula Murray. Stepsiblings Kelly Jernigan, Todd Jernigan and Jill Brooks, in-laws Dennis and Cindy Knight, Megan McCluskey, Heath Knight and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive him.
