Meryl Cox Fisher passed away peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Homestead of Leawood. She was born on October 26, 1913 in Elsmore, KS to Harry and Nettie (Donaho) Cox. She attended school and church in Elsmore and was baptized in the Methodist church at the age of twelve. She moved to Kansas City in 1930 and was a homemaker and mother of four children, Jack, Dorothy, Elaine, and Phil Whitaker. During the war she worked for two years at North American Bomber Plant. Later she spent most of her working years at the Cook, Paint, and Varnish Company.
Meryl married David Fisher, Sr. and moved to Platte City in 1953, becoming the second mother to David, Mary Francis, and Barney. She lived in Platte City for thirty-five years and was active in the Baptist Church where she has many close friends.
She moved to Overland Park in 1988 to be closer to family. She joined the Village Presbyterian Church soon after in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Nettie Cox, her husband David Fisher Sr., five daughters; Dorothy Franz, Elaine Lemieux, Jean Fisher, Sue Fisher, and Jeanne Whitaker, three sons; Jack Whitaker, Phil Whitaker, and David Fisher Jr., two brothers, Omer and Roscoe Cox, five sisters, Mildred Lander, Darleen Albert, Colleen Cox, Ruth Conway, and Blanche Stanley.
She is survived by her children, Mary Francis and Don Edwards, Bryron Fisher, Al Lemieux, and Judy Whitaker, 18 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren and many friends.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 12 from 5:00-7:00 pm at D.W. Newcomers, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS. Memorial services will be on Thursday, June 13, 10:00 am, at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS, and burial will follow at 1:00 pm in Elsmore, KS.
