Merle D. Howard, 94, of Mission, KS, passed away at St. Luke?s Hospital on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Services to celebrate Merle?s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 8 at Countryside Christian Church, 6101 Nall Ave., Mission, KS 66202. Visitation will be 10-11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, MO. Memorial donations may be made in Merle?s honor to Countryside Christian Church or to the Scholarship Fund of the Starlight Chapter, ABWA c/o Kate Rynard, 6213 Harrison, Kansas City, MO 64110.
Merle was born to Harley and Hattie Mercer Dye on August 7, 1913, in Bendena, KS. She graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. She moved to the Kansas City area in the 1930?s, eventually settling in Fairway where she lived for almost 50 years before moving to Mission Springs Assisted Living. Merle had a long career as a secretary. She worked for Hallmark Cards and Russell Stover Candies before retiring from the H. D. Lee Company. She was a member of Countryside Christian Church where she had been active in her Circle and Sunday School class. She was named Woman of the Year in 2001 by the Starlight Chapter of American Business Women?s Association (ABWA). She was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin Whitworth ?Whit? Howard and by her parents; her brothers Virgil, Wayne and Byron Dye; her sister Dee Isley; and her granddaughter Claire Howard. She leaves her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Jaylene Howard of Arvada, CO; her daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Kenneth Jordan of Lansing, KS; her grandchildren Cynthia Coe, Christopher Howard and Cherylene Howard, all of CO; Karen Jordan, Overland Park, KS; Kirsten Allen, Hanover, MD; Kenneth Jordan, Jr., Columbus, GA; and Kevin Jordan, Lenexa, KS; and 9 great-grandchildren.
