Mel Hagemann, age 90, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2008.
A Kansas City area resident for 88 years, Mel was born September 17, 1918 in Winnett, MT, to Werner G. and Mollie Smith Hagemann.
Mel?s memberships include Prairie Baptist Church, The Flying Tigers Association ? 14th Air Force, National Eagle Scout Association, VFW Post #846, American Legion Post #370, and the Classic Thunderbird Club of Kansas City. Mel was a former member of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and the Prairie Village Park Board.
His varied careers began as an embalmer and funeral director prior to attending Beloit College, Beloit, WI. During World War II, Mel enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps ? U.S. Air Force, becoming a B-25 pilot in China with the Flying Tigers. He was a Captain in the 14th AF ? 11th Bomb Squadron. After the war, he served in the Reserves and worked as an air traffic controller for many years. He founded and served as President of Contour Packaging, Inc. until 1972 when he retired.
Mel was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Appleton Hagemann, in 2001; and his siblings Joan Denny, W.G. Hagemann, Jr., Marjorie Braun and Rev. Robert Hagemann.
He is survived by his daughter Nancy Hagemann of Overland Park, KS, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to a graveside service at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Maple Hill Cemetery, 2301 S. 34 St., Kansas City, KS. Visitation will follow the graveside service at Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Ave., Prairie Village, KS, 66208.
