Mary Elizabeth Wells was born on March 14, 1926, in Neodesha, Kansas. She passed away on January 26, 2010, at St. Luke’s hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by family and friends. Mary was the daughter of Carl and Ruth Rice, and survived her sisters Grace, Carlene, and Ruth. Mary married Samuel J. Wells on April 1, 1944, and the two lived in Fairway, Kansas for over thirty years.
As a young woman, Mary attended Ferry Hall School in Lake Forest, Illinois. She and her husband, Sam, traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. Sam passed away in 2001. Mary is remembered by her friends and sons as a loving, generous and independent woman and a loyal friend. She had a wide-ranging intellect, and was an avid and eclectic reader of everything from detective novels to history, politics, science and popular culture. Her husband, Sam, was a successful attorney, and Mary shared his interest in law from his time in law school throughout his career. Her favorite activities in recent times were outings to places around the Kansas City area with her good friend Norma, to operas with her friend Barbara, and to movies with her son Duncan. Up to a week before she fell ill in mid-January, 2010, Mary walked daily, often swam, drove, traveled, and maintained her independence.
She is survived by her sons, Samuel Wells (Donna), Robert Wells (Connie), and Duncan Wells, and her grandchildren, Julia, Daniel, and Matthew Wells, and Nathan and Bryan Evert.
