Mary Candeloro Schackmann passed away from natural causes on November 21, 2012 at the age of 93. Mary Candeloro was born on Oct 30, 1919 in Lanciano, Italy. In 1927, she traveled with a sister and mother to New York City to join her father who had become a US citizen. Following graduation from Hunter College in 1941 she worked for the US Treasury Department for 18 months. She then joined the US Marine Corps Women's Reserve and served until 1945. During her war service she married Wayne Schackmann, a Navy gunner's mate. Following the war, they lived in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado before moving to Kansas City. Mary taught elementary school in Overland Park, Kansas for 11 years while raising her two sons, Robert and Terry. Wayne, having a love of the rural setting, urged the couple to settle on 15 acres near Lawrence, Kansas in 1973. The years in Lawrence were enjoyed immensely as they split time between their cabin in Idaho and their home in Lawrence with its big garden and horses. Mary volunteered for the organization Small World that provided her opportunities to meet young people from around the world, which led to travels through South America and the Galapagos. Mary enjoyed experiencing foreign cultures through additional trips to Japan, Italy, France, and Spain. She also participated in a variety of Elder Hostel trips within the US and taught English as a foreign language to many university families at KU. Mary is survived by a brother, Frank, (Long Island, NY), her son Robert, who lives with his wife Barbara in Salt Lake City, UT, and her three grandchildren, Alisa (Austin), Karl (Washington, DC) and Elizabeth (Salt Lake City). Her daughter-in-law, Hideko Schackmann lives in Kansas City. At Mary's request no memorial service will be held.
