JEAN FINK
Mary Jean Fink, 89, passed away on July 6, 2011 at her home in Prairie Village, KS.
Jean was born October 16, 1921 at the farmstead of her parents Oley and Ada (Willoughby) Apt, near Buffalo, Kansas. Determined to fully develop the creative talents she nurtured in 4H, she helped put herself through college, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Kansas State University. After graduating Jean joined the Gas Service Company in Kansas City, MO, where she served as Home Service Director. Jean and her colleagues helped thousands expand their food preparation skills with demonstrations throughout Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri.
Jean was married in 1950 to Robert Fink and they raised two sons. Jean was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Together with Bob, she devoted herself to many church activities, including volunteer service with Crosslines. Jean was an enthusiastic participant in United Methodist Women. Among her many UMW mission activities, she played a key role in conceiving Asbury’s Soupfest, a popular fund-raising event for 25 years.
Jean’s lifelong interest in crafts and cooking was expressed in many memorable ways, from beautiful quilts, decorations and home-made clothing to much anticipated and always unique birthday cake creations for her beloved grandsons. Her warmth and ability to make every life event special will be lovingly remembered by all her relatives.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Bob and brother Mel. She is survived by her younger son Doug Fink, older son Steve Fink and wife Kathy, and two grandsons Matthew and Ryan, all of Overland Park, KS, her brother Glenn Apt, of Brownsville, TX, and her nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11 in the chapel of Asbury United Methodist Church, 75th and Nall. The family will receive friends at the chapel following the service. Inurnment will take place in Buffalo, KS later in the week. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church and will designated to the Asbury United Methodist Church Sanctuary Decoration memorial.
