Mary Elizabeth Ortolf Baker passed away after a brief illness on August 16, 2012 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 89 years young. Mary was born on May 13, 1923 in a small home in Edgerton, Kansas to Josephine Glavin Ortolf and Charles Eugene Ortolf. Mary was an only child and her parents loved her deeply. She grew up in a loving household surrounded by extended family.
Mom graduated from Edgerton High School in 1941 and then graduated from the Ursuline Academy in Paola, KS before leaving to work in Kansas City at the outset of WWII. Through one of life's little flukes she met John Wilson Baker of Little Rock, Arkansas while he was stationed at Olathe Naval Air Base. They were both smitten and as soon as John was discharged from the Navy they were married on September 6, 1945 at Assumption Catholic Church in Edgerton, Kansas. This wonderful union lasted 54 years until John passed away in 1999.
Mary was a voracious reader with a keen intellect and a wonderful sense of humor. She was loved by all who knew her. She was proud to be a lifelong Catholic and Democrat.
Survivors include her 4 children, John (Beth) Weatherby Lake, MO, Nan (Randy) Lenexa, KS , Peggy (Gary)Overland Park, KS and Tom (Jane) Lake Oswego, OR. Mary also had 6 grandchildren, Jason Galvin, Kelly Galvin Fleming, Valerie Pruessner, Lisa Kirsten Anthony, Amber Dougan and Ally Baker and recently was blessed with four great grand children, Teagan Fleming, Connor Galvin, Jack Anthony and Charlie Rose Anthony.
Mom, your children love you more than you could possibly know and you will be missed tremendously for the remainder of our lives. We are all forever grateful for all the love and kindness you always showed us. You are forever in our hearts.
