Mary Aileen Doherty

Mary Ellen Aileen Doherty, 88, of Prairie Village, KS passed away Monday, November 2, 2009. Mary Ellen was born on December 4, 1920 and grew up in the Rosedale area of Kansas City, KS. She married John Doherty on August 20, 1943 and together they raised seven children. Mary Ellen was a devoted wife and mother and cherished many lifelong friendships. She and John were charter members of Cure of Ars Catholic Church and Mary Ellen volunteered with various organizations including the Mission Group and the Cure of Ars School library. Mary Ellen pursued
many interests that included painting, gardening, bridge club, horse shows and sporting events. Mary Ellen was an avid KU basketball fan and eventually made peace with Roy Williams' departure. She enjoyed many trips with John and the family to their farm near Garden City, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, John Patrick Doherty. Her survivors include: three sons, Michael Doherty, Steve Doherty and wife, Melanie (Alexander, Neal and Ryan) and Mark Doherty along with four daughters, Patricia Oxler and husband David (Julia, Brian and Elizabeth), Mary Conlon and husband, James (Juliet and Mara), Kathleen Doherty and Eileen Kelly and husband Benjamin (Timothy, Mark, Daniel and David); seven great grandchildren.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Villa Saint Joseph for their dedicated, compassionate care of Mary Ellen.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, November 6, 2009 followed by 10:30 funeral service at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road, Leawood, KS. A private family burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Villa Saint Joseph, 11901 Rosewood, Overland Park, KS. 66209.
