MARTHA HUNT WESTBROOK
Martha Hunt Westbrook, 88, loving wife, mother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 21, 2010, at Kansas City Hospice House. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, at Unity Temple on the The Plaza, 707 W. 47th St., Kansas City, Missouri.
Martha was born to Leigh and Eva Hunt in Breckenridge, Missouri, on September 2, 1921. A beloved and long-time receptionist at the National Collegiate Athletic Association, she was affectionately known as “the voice of the NCAA.” When Martha retired from the NCAA in 1988, she was replaced by two people. She is irreplaceable now. Martha is survived by her son, David H. Westbrook of Kansas City. An avid reader and a nemesis of the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, in the last decade of her life, Martha took up the hobby of memorizing classic poetry, from which she happily and liberally quoted when offering life advice to her son. She is preceded in death by her husband Frank C. Westbrook, Jr., and her sisters Blanche C. Borg of Prairie Village; Dorothy Hunt of North Kansas City; and Eleanor Sharp of Westport, Connecticut.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, www.kansascityhospice.org.
