Marjorie Young

Marjorie ?Maxine? (Miller) Young, age 87, Overland Park, Kansas passed away Saturday, April 7, 2007 at the Johnson County Nursing Center. Memorial service will be 11:00A.M. Friday, April 13, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, Kansas 66208. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Village Presbyterian Church Food Pantry or Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City, 3908 Washington, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.

Maxine was born December 13, 1919 in Des Moines, Iowa, where she spent her childhood and graduated from East High School. In 1940, she joined the Order of the Eastern Star becoming a Worthy Matron active in the Kansas City area. She became a Queen of the Daughters of the Nile in 1951. During WWII, Maxine moved to Kansas City, contributing to the war effort by working at the Pratt-Whitney airplane engine factory making engines for the B-25 bomber. She worked for a while at Meredith Publishing Company in Des Moines, Iowa. Maxine was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served as a church deacon.

While living in Kansas City during the War, she met Arthur Dean Young and they were married February 27, 1949. Dean preceded her in death. She was a supportive wife to Dean, a good mother to her children, and a loving grandmother. She contributed to school activities as well as being a Den Mother and Brownie Leader. Maxine always took care of stray dogs and would adopt them as her own. She also loved horses.

She is survived by her son, Noel Young and Christine La Fon of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Phyllis Young and grandson, Riley of Olathe, KS; sister, Jane and brother-in-law, Wally Ferrall of Canton, OH; her nephews and their families. The family wishes to express gratitude to employees and friends at the Johnson County Nursing Center and Hospice services.
