Marjorie Jean Elliott

August 21, 1921 — February 7, 2010

Marjorie Jean Schroeder Elliott, 88 years old, passed away peacefully of a variant form of Parkinson's on February 7, 2010 at her home at Bishop Spencer Place, Kansas City, MO.

Baptized as an infant at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Kansas City, MO, she was the eldest of four daughters born to Harry Robert and Marrie Jean Carr Schroeder at St. Joseph hospital in Kansas City, Missouri August 21, 1921. Third generation of Kansas City, granddaughter of Dr. Edward Dwight and Abigail Gorton Carr. Graduated from Border Star Elementary, Southwest High School, attended St Mary's Hall in Fairbault, MN and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Kansas and member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Married Raymond Glenn Elliott on May 11, 1943. Following Dr. Elliott's military service, they established their residence of their own design in Reinhardt Estates, in the Township of Mission, now of Fairway, Kansas, known to many as the "Reinhardt Hilton" living there 56 years.

Her charter membership in St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church of Mission, Kansas included service in the Altar Guild, Daughters of the King, Horizon Arts and director of youth plays. She sponsored two foreign high school students with the AFS exchange program at Shawnee Mission East High School, hosted numerous international teachers for similar programs from around the world, including a minister from Haiti, Father Lozama of Torbek, Haiti and wife who were accommodated over the month while he underwent x-ray therapy at St. Luke's Hospital, and she volunteered on two medical assistance trips to Haiti. Marge and Glenn traveled to visit their extended exchange families as well as friends on their own by twelve trips with the Elder Hostel program for a total of 36 foreign countries, keeping a journal while Glenn photographed.

Marge's many community activities and services included lifetime membership in the Kansas City Young Matrons, where she participated for over 40 years in their Community Children's Theater trouping unit as a performer, costume designer and seamstress. Active in Girl Scout events as a volunteer and trainer, awarded the 'Thanks Badge' and employed as a professional leader. She managed the Metro Kansas City day-camp program. She was a charter member, garden club lecturer, docent and president of the John Wornall House Museum and board member of the Jackson County Historical Society. In her 70's, she portrayed the seventeen-year-old Elza Wornall. She wrote and directed murder mystery plays and fundraisers for St. Michael's, The Wornall House and Missouri Repertory Theatre Guild. She was a member of Knights Templar at St. Mary's Church.

Her sister, Evelyn Waite and her husband Harry Waite, a lawyer of Dodge City, KS have both proceeded in death. Survived by husband Glenn of 66 plus years of marriage; two sisters, Mary Lou Whitney Hendrickson of Saratoga Springs, NY and Charline Ecker of Fredericksburg, VA; five children and spouses: Tom and Barbara Elliott of Duluth, MN; Bob and Mary Elliott of Midland, TX; Dick and Cindy Elliott of Highlands Ranch, CO; Jean Carr of Tucson, AZ; and Missy and Tom Carney of Kansas City, MO; eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren.

Marge enjoyed a rich and full life, particularly with her many friends and extended family. An avid gardener, chef, seamstress and outdoor enthusiast, many will remember her wonderful camping trips with hand-sewn equipment and clothing for river trips, hiking and skiing journeys. She participated with the Ozark Wilderness Waterways Club in blocking the planned dam of the Buffalo River and establishment of the National Riverways System.

Memorial Service by Father David With and reception following to be held at 12:30, Saturday, February 27, 2010, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church at 6630 Nall Ave., Mission, KS. Additional reception will be held at Bishop Spencer Place at 4301 Madison Ave, Kansas City, Mo at 3:30, Saturday, February 27, 2010.

Flowers appreciated, or donations to support one of Marge's interest groups. One possible donation is to The Costume Fund at The John Wornall House Museum, 6115 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo 64113: Attention Kandice. This donation recognizes Marge's designing and sewing the period costumes at the house and will allow for their continued use or replacement as required. The other possible recipient is St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Ave., Mission, KS 66202: Attention Horizon Arts Fund. This recognizes Marge's work for the theater, music and arts at the church.

Her remains are to be cremated, with interment beneath the altar of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, where the ashes of three grandchildren await her there.
