Marie H. McCarty, 93, passed away peacefully from natural causes, in her home on March 22, 2015. She was surrounded by loving family members, friends and caregivers.
Marie was born to parents Karl and Helen Hummes in Kansas City, Kansas on August 15, 1921. She was born on the feast day of the Assumption of Mary, and she was named Marie, the French version of Mary, in honor of her French descent. She attended Bishop Ward High School and graduated in 1939. She obtained secretarial skills which she used to support herself and her children over the years. She worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, where one of her main duties was to take shorthand and write reports about train accidents. She would go on site and gather the information for the report. She later obtained a position with the Brotherhood Railway Carmen of the United States and Canada labor union as the Executive Secretary to the President. She retired early in 1984, where she enjoyed spending her time with family and friends. She volunteered through her church and visited fellow parishioners who were hospitalized.
She also enjoyed traveling, and she took a cruise that sailed around the world for twenty years in a row. She and a group of friends enjoyed spending the winter months out on the ocean visiting exotic, warm locations. They would have a cocktail before dinner and hold a meeting of a club they invented, known as the S.K.I.N. Club which stood for Spend Kid’s Inheritance Now. She always had funny and interesting stories to tell about her travels.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, spouses, and three daughters, Jeanne Gibbs, Joan Hess, Janet Hinz and two sons, Jack Gibbs and Richard Gibbs. She is survived by her two children, Jim McCarty, (Lydia Jones) of Overland Park, Susan Bearce(Chuck), a daughter-In-law, Carolyn Gibbs of Roswell, CA; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed life, and loved a good steak dinner and a Jack Daniel’s and Seven cocktail. She also loved anything chocolate. She loved her family and friends and was warm and quick-witted. Her courage and Faith helped her through the difficult times, and made the good times even better. She will be sorely missed.
