Margie Giordano, 87, of Mission, Kansas passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2008. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Thursday, June 19th at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 6306 Roe, Prairie Village, Kansas. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation will be 6-8:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 18th at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Southminster Presbyterian Church or Shriner?s Children Hospital.
Margie was born in Clinton, IN on September 19, 1920 to Charles Anthony Payton and LuCretia Matherly Payton. She was the youngest child and was preceded in death by five older siblings: Mary Marie and Mamie Alyce (both of whom died shortly after birth), Ethel B. Payton Kiger (Clinton), William Lawrence Payton (Terre Haute), and Janet M. Payton Shannon (Clinton). Growing up in Clinton, Margie attended Hillcrest Presbyterian Church, she took dancing lessons (tap was her favorite) and she belonged to the Girl Scouts. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1940.
Margie had admired Tony from afar and thought he was somebody very special. One evening when Tony came home from Chicago, he stopped by to visit the family. Margie was a senior in high school and was in the front room practicing her typing. Tony and Margie talked for awhile and then he asked her if she wanted to go see a movie. That was their first date and they married on July 26, 1941 in Chicago and had 65 happy years together.
Margie had many interests and hobbies including sewing, embroidery, crocheting, traveling, and she was a bridge player. Tony and Margie took ballroom dancing lessons. She always had a flower garden, roses being her favorite. She had an extensive seashell collection and gave some lectures on her collection. After moving to the Kansas City area, Margie joined the Meera Chapter 491 Order of the Eastern Star; she was a 50 year member and served as Worthy Matron. She also belonged to the El Maat Temple No. 120 of the Daughters of the Nile; she served as Queen in 2000 and was appointed Supreme Escort to American Flag in 2003 at the 87th Annual Supreme Session in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Tony David Giordano, on August 19, 2006. She is survived by her son, Tony David Giordano, Jr. and his wife Kathy; daughter, Virginia Joy Giordano Harmer and her husband Howard; grandson, Brian Harmer and his wife Kaleena; and great grandson, Mathew Tony Harmer.
