Marcella Huttie died in her home on Friday, March 7, 2008. She died peacefully with her family and loved ones nearby. Marcella was 94 years old. For her, this was the end of a beautiful story.
Born on October 14, 1913, Marcella lived a long and wonderful life. She was born in Salina, Kansas, the second child of Barbara Geiger Penix and William Harper Penix. In 1931, Marcella graduated from Salina High School and went on to earn her teaching certificate. For one year, Marcella taught in a rural one-room school. The following year, Marcella returned to Salina to work in a doctor?s office. There, she met Frederick Edward Huttie, Jr. who became the love of
her life.
Fred and Marcella were married on November 15, 1941, just before Fred, an officer in the Navy, was sent overseas. When Fred returned from World War II, the couple began their life together in Kansas City and never left the area. They were married 49 years when Fred passed away in 1991.
Fred and Marcella lived what now seems an idyllic life, focusing on family, close friends, and their church. Once Fred returned from war, Marcella never worked outside of the home. Her family always came first.
Marcella raised three children, Frederick Edward Huttie III (November 16, 1945 ? August 16, 1970), LesLee Huttie Smith, and Joe Lee Huttie. Marcella played a significant role in raising her three grandchildren, LesLee?s son Sean Frederick McKenna, Joe?s son Phillip Lee Huttie, and Joe?s daughter Katie Lee Huttie. At the same time Marcella was caring for her children, she took care of her own aging parents who lived with the family until they passed away in their late 90?s. Marcella was just getting to know her three great grandchildren, Cormac Sean McKenna, son of Sean and Kimberly McKenna; and Caroline and Olivia Smith, daughters of Adam and Melanie Smith.
In addition to her immediate family, Marcella was loved and cared for by an extended family that includes LesLee?s husband Pete Smith and his two children Adam and Hallie, Joe?s fianc?e Anne Brewer, Sean?s father Doug McKenna, and Phillip Lee and Katie?s mother, Susie Huttie.
The family wishes to thank Marcella?s loyal and devoted care givers who gave the family the gift of letting their Mother live in her own home. They also are part of our extended family. Thank you Johnnie Mae Tuggle, JoAnne Bailey, and Roni Hinds. We are forever in your debt.
The family also wishes to thank Hospice of Kansas and especially Beverly Landis, who showed us the way.
Marcella was a person who gave of her self. She rarely complained and always wanted to know what she could do for us. Even in her later years, she maintained a circle of friends of all ages who loved her.
Marcella is preceded in death by her parents; her brother Harold; her beloved son Rick, a casualty of the Vietnam War; and by her husband and dearest friend, Fred, in whose loving arms she is now being held.
