Lyle O. Akins, 75, of Kansas City, KS, passed away Friday, April 30, 2010. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel; burial in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Zoo.
Lyle was born March 27, 1935 in Mt. Home, AR to Loy and Hazel (Ridings) Akins. He lived most of his early life in Orville, CA. Lyle was a U.S. Army veteran and discharged as a Sergeant. He was a Church of Christ minister of the gospel in Lewiston, ID after graduating from the Bear Valley School of Biblical Studies in Denver, CO. Lyle also worked as a House Parent at New Mexico Christian Home in Portales, NM and retired from Darling International, Kansas City, KS, as a big rig mechanic. In his early years, he worked as an A & E Mechanic for Western Airlines in Los Angeles, CA. Lyle volunteered for the Kansas City Zoo as a Docent. He had a love for children and shared his knowledge of animals with them. Lyle married Patricia (Dray) Akins of Pittsburg, KS in 1960 in, she survives at the home. Other survivors include three children: Felicia Moore, Timothy Akins, and Jim Akins; seven grandchildren: Amanda Beard, Wes Simmons, Abby Osborn, Miles Osborn Akins, Garrett Akins, Katie Akins, and Ella Akins; two great grandchildren; and one nephew, Lyle Akin, and one niece, Helen Bozo.
