Lorraine Kilroy was a devoted wife, mother (and grandmother) and servant of the Lord. She died July 21, 2010 at her residence at Claridge Court (Somerset Health Center in Prairie Village, Kansas).
She was born Katherine Lorraine Butler on April 23, 1918 in Hutchinson, Minnesota. Her parents were Henry E. and Katherine K Butler. When she was 9, her family, (including her older brothers Ed and Fred) moved to Kansas City, MO. Lorraine attended Benton and E.C. White grade schools, Southwest High School and Kansas City Junior College and rode there daily by streetcar. In 1939, she graduated from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin with a major in sociology and a minor in education.
Lorraine first met her husband, Jack, at Kansas City Junior College where Lorraine said he was attracted to the tennis racket she was carrying – but no doubt to her, also. Jack and Lorraine were engaged at the end of his third year of law school but were not married until January 26, 1946, after Jack returned from the European Theater of World War II. They had two sons – John Muir Kilroy, Jr., (Jack, Jr.) and William Terrence Kilroy (Terry). She was proud that both sons practiced law with her husband at Shughart Thomson & Kilroy. The entire family, including grandchildren, have enjoyed tennis and competing in an annual Kilroy tennis tournament held on Thanksgiving morning. Other interests shared by Lorraine and Jack were the French language, American primitive furniture, and traveling.
Lorraine joined Country Club Methodist Church in 1934 which she attended ever since. The church experiences most memorable to her were teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, helping a Vietnamese family settle in Kansas City, attending Troost Methodist, an inner-city church for three years, and belonging to a church prayer group starting in the early 1960’s.
Before her marriage, she was a copywriter-layout artist and secretary in a Kansas City advertising agency. She felt most privileged to have been a full-time wife, mother and grandmother. She was secretary of the first Prairie Village Park Commission, a member of The Book Club since the early 50’s (formed by high school friends) and a member of the Sunday evening mixed-doubles tennis group called the Rowdy Infighters.
Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, her brothers and her husband who died on July 9, 2010. Lorraine wanted to be with “my Jack” and now she is. She is survived by her sons, Jack, Jr. (Peggi) and Terry (Marianne), five grandchildren: Bridget (Brad) Hoffman; John, III (Jennifer) Kilroy, Kevin (Alyssa) Kilroy, Kyle Kilroy and Katherine Kilroy, four great-grandchildren, nine nephews and two nieces.
A memorial service will be held at Country Club Methodist Church, 57th & Wornall, at 3 p.m. Friday July 23, 2010.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to Country Club Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank the devoted caregivers at the Somerset Health Center for their care and support for Lorraine the past two and one-half years, and to Grace Hospice.
