Loarn Beaty Pemberton, 72, Prairie Village, KS, native of St. Joseph, died Sunday, March 8 after a long illness. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 10th with reception to follow at Colonial United Church of Christ, 7039 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, March 9th at DW. Newcomer’s, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Drs. Beaty and Deloras Pemberton Scholarship Fund at UMKC School of Medicine or to Colonial United Church of Christ in Prairie Village, KS.
Beaty Pemberton was a general surgeon, educator, professor emeritus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, and chief of surgery at Truman Medical Center. During his 25-year tenure at UMKC Medical School, he served as a docent, assistant dean of curriculum, chief of surgery and surgical program director. He served on the Board of Truman Medical Center and as president of the medical dental staff. Before his time at TMC, he was chief of surgery at the Medical Center of Columbus Georgia. He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in General Studies from Harvard University, received an M.D. from Northwestern University and an M.S. in Surgery from the University of Illinois. He earned an M.A. in Theology from Trinity University, where he wrote his dissertation, Should the Doctor Tell the Truth: A Theological Analysis. He completed his surgical residency at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago.
Beaty was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Western Surgical Society, and director of the Metabolic Support Team at TMC. He established the Respiratory Care Center in Columbus, GA for textile workers suffering from occupational pulmonary disease. He published many professional articles and two books, the Workbook of Surgical Anatomy and Treatment of Water, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Disorders in the Surgical Patient. He served as a captain in the United States Armed Forces. In retirement, he taught a course on the application of Bowen Family Systems Theory to primary physician residents at Truman Medical Center, Lakewood.
In addition to his professional dedication, Beaty was devoted to the well being of his family, both immediate and extended. He loved his family, teaching, surgery, learning, helping to heal people, the UMKC School of Medicine, and Colonial Church of Prairie Village, United Church of Christ. He served on the board of Eden Seminary, United Church of Christ for six years. He was a long time patron of the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera, and the Kansas City Repertory Theater, and for many years he was a summer resident and supporter of the Chautauqua Institute in New York State.
Beaty is survived by his wife of 50 years, Deloras Knepper Pemberton; daughter Michelle Dilmore, son-in-law Kevin Dilmore, grandchildren Stacy Elizabeth Bonds, Amy Christine Bonds, step-granddaughter Colleen Dilmore; son Mark Beaty Pemberton, daughter-in-law Barbara Tucker Pemberton, grandchildren Tyler James Pemberton, Jason Mark Pemberton, Allison Lynn Pemberton; his brother Lee Shelley Pemberton III and sister-in-law Kay Scott Pemberton; brother-in-law Paul A. Knepper and sister-in-law Zabute Zaparackas; niece Katherine Knepper; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
