Mrs. Letha Buckley Bash

August 30, 1911 — February 11, 2009

Letha Adele Buckley Bash, resident of Shawnee Mission, KS, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 surrounded by loved ones at her home.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4pm Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Country Club Christian Church 6101 Ward Pkwy, Kansas City, MO. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Luke’s Hospice 12300 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, KS 66213.
Letha was born August 30, 1911 in Monroe, IA. She lived a long and extraordinary life, the youngest child of Ralph and Myrtle Buckley and loving sister to her older brothers, Doyle and Carl. At age 12, she was surprised with the gift of a piano, and she found herself even more surprised as she sat down, able to play the new gift by ear. Her beloved father passed away the following year, and she began accepting work after school, playing the piano in the local silent movie theater. Upon graduation from school, she moved with her mother to Des Moines, and began a career at Banker’s Life Insurance Company. Letha married the up-and-coming minister Lawrence Bash in 1936 and remained happily so for over 63 years.
The Bashes began their lifetime commitment to the Christian Church in Atlantic, Iowa and Auburn, Nebraska. It was in Nebraska where they welcomed their beloved daughter, Jeroldene Bash Trammell, into the young family. The Bashes were called to Wyatt Park Christian Church in St. Joseph, MO in 1943. In 1949 the University Christian Church in Austin, TX urged them to accept the arduous task of starting from nothing and building an active and fully self supporting campus congregation. In just over 10 years of service and dedication, the Bashes succeeded beyond the fondest dreams of their sponsors and successfully grew The University Christian Church from 60 to nearly 1000 members.
Ultimately the Bashes found their home at Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, MO where Dr. Bash served as Senior Minister for nearly 20 years. As a very active member of the many congregations they served together, Mrs. Bash was known for her love of music, her dedication to the church staff, friends and family and her gift with children. Mrs. Bash also served critical roles within the larger church community including the President of the International Council of Minister’s Wives; the President of the Minister’s Wives Alliance of Missouri; and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, which oversaw the work of more than 100 missions around the world. She was active in the PEO and multiple church circles, including one which was named in her honor. Mrs. Bash was also an enthusiastic promoter of the development and dedication of Tall Oaks Conference Center, a ministry of the Disciples of Christ of Greater Kansas City. Over the years, Mrs. Bash was able to see firsthand some of the many lives she was touching as the couple led tours, the world over, with special emphasis on The Holy Land, Europe, Africa, the Orient, and yearly visits to the Rocky Mountains.
In addition to her many responsibilities, she found great satisfaction as homemaker to her adoring husband, mother to their beautiful daughter, and ultimately grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an accomplished artist in needlepoint, and leaves cherished pieces to her grateful family. Letha Bash lived an exceptional life and leaves an indelible legacy on the many that continue to dearly love her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Lawrence W. Bash, two brothers Doyle and Carl.
Survivors include daughter Jeroldene Trammell and husband Leon; granddaughters Kirsten, Alissa Preston and husband Philip and Natasha Miller and husband Craig; great grandchildren Isabelle Beatrice Miller, Anna Bash Miller, Philip Lawrence Preston, Adele Leigh Preston and Louise Aline Preston and loving caregiver Dorothy Williams.
