Kenneth W. Wilson, Sr., 90, passed away at his home August 24. Funeral services will be at D. W. Newcomers at 81st & Metcalf at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 28. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday morning. Burial to follow at Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens.
Ken was born on the family farm north of Concordia, KS on 2/4/1919. He graduated from Concordia, KS high school in 1937. He started his career with Safeway Stores when he was a teenager. He managed several stores in the Kansas City metro area. He was president of the Safeway Employees Association for several years and served on the board of the Safeway Credit Union. He retired in 1986 after 50 years of service.
Ken married his childhood sweetheart, Fern Garlow, on May 18, 1941. They were married for 52 years when Fern passed away in 1993. He was a World War II Veteran in the 107th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron.
Ken was preceded in death by sisters Minnie McCracken, and Bernice Lambert, brother Avery Wilson, and great grandsons Ashton Forrester and Nathan Call.
Survivors include his sister Avis May Cory, son Kenneth Wilson, Jr., daughter Carol Brooks, granddaughters Christine Call and Kimberlee McCannon, grandson, Kenneth Wilson III, and five great grandchildren.
His family, friends, neighbors, and customers loved his big heart, and twinkling eyes. He was a wonderful teacher to us all, showing us how to live a good life with good values.
