KENNETH L. SWEDLUND

Kenneth L. Swedlund, 88, passed away peacefully January 4, 2011 at Bickford of Mission Springs Assisted Living. Memorial services will be held at Old Mission Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Fairway, KS 66205, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 1:00PM, with visitation after the service.

"Ken" or "Kenny" Swedlund was born February 24, 1922, to Alfred V. and Lydia E. Swedlund in Smolan, KS. He served his country during WWII as a Petty Officer in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945. Ken graduated from K.U. in 1950 with a major in Business Administration. He entered the Real Estate field in 1951 and operated J. Lester Brown Realtors as Broker/owner from 1961 until 2001 when he sold the company. Ken continued his involvement in commercial real estate until his retirement. Throughout his 50+ years in Real Estate, Ken was awarded numerous honors and recognitions including: 1965 - President of Johnson County Board of Realtors, 1966 - State Chairman National Institute of Real Estate Brokers, 1967 - Realtor of the Year, Johnson County Board of Realtors, 1967-73 - National Director , National Assoc. of Real Estate Boards, 1970 - State Chairman, National Multi-listing Service, 1971 - Secretary, Kansas Assoc. of Realtors, 1972 - Vice President, Kansas Assoc. of Realtors. He also served as a past director of the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, Mission Chamber of Commerce, and the Better Business Bureau of Kansas City. Since 1951, he has been a very active and loyal member of Old Mission Methodist Church, and as a member of the “First Raitters” Sunday school class. Ken was an active member of Milburn Country Club for many years, where he enjoyed golfing with his wife and their many friends. Ken was an avid K.U. basketball fan, and a supporter of numerous charitable organizations and causes. He enjoyed playing cards with his bridge clubs, and had a special talent to always prevail when playing poker and monopoly!

Ken was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Shirley M. Swedlund, who passed away 11-24-06 and who he dearly missed. He is survived by sisters, Corrine Norburg, Salina, KS and Florence Rose, Oakland, CA, his brother, Jim Swedlund, Salina, KS, and three children: Karen Cook (Glen) of Houston, TX, Vicki Swedlund of Roeland Park, KS, and James Swedlund (Lisa) of Overland Park, KS, and two grandchildren, Sarah Kimmel and Matthew Stacy.

Ken was a much-loved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, and had many long-term valued friends and business associates. Ken truly lived by the Christian principles he valued so greatly and his integrity, generosity, and unfailing positive attitude was an inspiration to all who knew him.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and thanks to all the staff at Bickford of Mission Springs Assisted Living for the excellent care and extraordinary concern given to both Ken and Shirley during their residence the past five years. Much gratitude and thanks also to his many friends who loved and supported him in so many ways during his struggle with Alzheimer's disease. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Old Mission Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Fairway, KS 66205.
