Joyce Murrell Perky, 85, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2012. Funeral services will be Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012 at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel with a visitation prior from 1-2 p.m.
Joyce was born in Kirksville, Missouri to Francis and Lora Grace Murrell. She attended school in Kirksville until moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1942, where she graduated from Westport High School in 1944. She worked for the Interstate Commerce Commission before attending Central Missouri State College where she became a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. After college she worked as a legal secretary. She was married to Jefferson A. Perky June 4, 1949. They had two sons, Daniel J. Perky and David W. Perky.
She was a loyal, supportive, and loving mother who served as a Cub Scout den mother, in many PTA offices, and was room mother for each of her sons. She also served her sorority alumnae in every office and was still a faithful member of the Kansas City, MO alumnae chapter. She became a "Golden Violet" in Sigma Sigma Sigma by participating in its activities for over 50 years. For a similar period of time, she was also a member of Overland Park Christian Church.
As a faithful and concerned fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, she could have been the first female NFL coach! She enjoyed playing fantasy football and handicapping horses (we are sure she had a winning record). She also was a dog's best friend. Loyal and faithful to her family and friends, she was as steady as a rock.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jeff A. Perky, her father, mother and brother. Surviving her are her sons Daniel J. Perky (Claire), Lexington, TN and David W. Perky (Teresa), Overland Park, KS, grandson Jeff Perky, Nashville, TN, granddaughter Elizabeth Perky, Nashville, TN, grandson Matt Perky, Overland Park, KS step-grandsons Will Buchanan and Ben Buchanan, Overland Park, KS.
