Joseph James Spohn

Joseph J Spohn, 92, died peacefully at home, in Overland Park, KS, with his wife on January 12, 2024. Born February 10,1931 in Butler, PA, he was the son of the late Alfred N. Spohn Sr and Mary Marra Spohn.

He retired from a life of sales, where he spent most of his time selling cars. His final working years were with Newcomer and Son’s helping others in their time of need. Joe will be remembered for his sense of humor, big heart and generosity.

After Graduating from Butler High School class of 1949, he joined the Navy in 1950 at the beginning of the Korean war where all five of the Spohn Brothers served. He was part of Air Transport Squadron One when he left for Radiological Defense Training. Here he learned to use equipment and procedures in case of an Atomic Attack. Upon returning to his squadron, he was a Flight Instrument Instructor – and Operator of the Basic Link Instrument Trainer.

Joe moved his family to Prairie Village, KS in 1963 to become a Buyer with Western Auto. He was part of the Junior Achievement mentoring program with several successful business teams. He was part of Boy Scout Troop 381 from 1968-1981. During his time in the Boy Scouts, he achieved levels of Scout Master, Camp Master, and Awarded Vigil of Order of the Arrow at Camp Nash. He loved to camp and be a part of the outdoors. Joe was also proud of his time as part of Elks Lodge 2395, where he achieved the highest level of Exalted Ruler. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his son Joseph J. Spohn II who died September 25, 2014, his parents, four brothers and two sisters. Surviving are his wife Mary Ann (Bish) Spohn who he married in 1960; three children: Theresa Monterville of Overland Park, Jerry (Lori) Spohn of Shawnee, Donna Cormeny (Clay) of Olathe, two sisters Mary Lou Bollinger of Merdian, PA and Camilla Adams of Mars, PA.  He adored his surviving six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
